Yoga plus Exercise
Welcome to my blog.
Thank you for visiting.
I have run a yoga plus exercise class since August 2010 at St Michael & All Angels church, Chiswick LONDON
W4 1TX (link).
I have a class at the Buddhist Vihara in The Avenue (just 2 minutes from the St Michael's church) (link) that I've recently restarted.
Each class is aimed at beginner-intermediate level (and is unsuitable if you're pregnant or you
have an injury).
I used to
incorporate about 25 minutes of circuit training composed of general exercises
but now each class focuses entirely on yoga. However, I still begin with
some limbering or warming up exercises for a few minutes, and then add for
about 5 minutes some simple core strengthening exercises. These are
important because of the core strength needed to perform yoga poses that require strength and
balance.
The class has relaxing music in the background.
The yoga I perform is a based on ashtanga and hatha poses, and I
include my own adaptations.
I tend to go through a lot of
poses in a class rather than focus on just a few. If you prefer to be guided
into performing poses rather than left to your own devices then this is the
class for you.
It's important to remember during each class to stay within your
personal limit by listening to your body, and to concentrate on what you are
doing and what I am asking you to do. Personal safety is paramount.
Please don't try to
compete with your classmate or you might pull a muscle, pinch a nerve, or hurt
yourself in some other way. Instead, know your limits and each week try to
reach them and gradually exceed them as your ability increases and your body is
able to stretch or twist or lift a little more than last time.
Yoga is a
progressive discipline: you should allow time for your body to develop
flexibility and strength; expecting too much too soon is likely to result in
disappointment.
Keep breathing
deeply and smoothly during poses and exercise, and feel free at any time to
take a personal time-out or a drink if you feel like it.
Some weeks you might feel tired
so cannot do as much as usual, or are perhaps finding it difficult to perform
the balancing poses. That’s OK; an off-week is bound to happen from time to
time, and especially after a tough day at work or at home (or both).
Costs:
Mondays: £7 per class. Tuesdays: £10 per class (60-75
mins) - pay as you go.
A yoga mat or bath towel is recommended.
The Monday class is held at 8pm at St Michael's church, Turnham Green (go
to the Parish office door at the rear of the church and press
the bell marked 'private').
The Tuesday class is held at 9.30am in a hall at
the Buddhist Vihara located in The Avenue opposite the church.
Please try and arrive 5 minutes before class starts so we can all start together on time.
